Artist's Comments

I'm upset that I took so many black and white photos.... it really killed some of the subtle details, I think.

But in any case, here's yet another.

Leave it up to the sun to make something beautiful. :-)

its a nice picture, good composition and lighting. I disagree about the whole black and white thing. black and white film can reveal more subtle details when used properly; however your probably right when its a situation where the subject is black and the background is white I have to say this picture does not make me think 'self preservation' but rather I'm about to get shot in the chest. Don't you think that perhaps carrying a concealed firearm makes you more likeley to encounter life ending circumstances?

PS:(are you shooting digital or film? digital tends to make a poor transition to black and white.)

"black and white film can reveal more subtle details when used properly;"

I concur... My original reason for using the black and white was a misguided "Well, it'll make the background more white, and since the gun is black, hey!" Duh. Only after doing a couple of the color ones and then ending up on this one did I realize how flawed my thinking was. The color adds something to it in this case, definitely. I don't think I've seen a black and white picture of a firearm (Modern or otherwise) that I thought was "well done"... Boooo on me.

"I have to say this picture does not make me think 'self preservation' but rather I'm about to get shot in the chest."

And here's a paradox. :-) What do you DO when you think you're about to get shot in the chest? Or, more realistically, what do you do if you find yourself in a developing situation where you feel it's likely you will be shot at? What are your options? The only gunfight you win is obviously the one you're not in, so your first option is to GTFO of there... But what if that's not possible? Always good to have plan B. :-)

"Don't you think that perhaps carrying a concealed firearm makes you more likeley to encounter life ending circumstances?"

Not at all. I don't go places that are extra dangerous just because I carry, and on top of that, carrying a firearm has a tendancy to make you slightly more aware of your surroundings, which can prevent such encounters in the first place. Criminals like easy victims. If you look like you're aware of what's going on around you, they may be less tempted to pick you out. If you look more capable of defending yourself (Whether from sheer size or some kind of weapon), you're an even less attractive target. And if all of those things are ignored, and you show the BG you're a good shot, well...

Aaaaaaaanyway... that could turn into a long rant for both of us, I'm sure... Not sure where you are in the U.S., but taking a good, serious pistol safety course (If you're nearby, I'd teach ya') would probably make you think about some things you may not have ever thought about... Having someone nail the responsibility and the respect required into your head, teaching you not to fear the object, but to consider the wielder, and the very common sense but often neglected basics of firearm safety, as well as basic marksmanship and scenario negotiation... Well... It's interesting. :-) It doesn't mean you have to own or carry a gun, but it does mean you get to learn how to safely deal with one, which could ONLY come in handy.

"PS:(are you shooting digital or film? digital tends to make a poor transition to black and white.)"
Digital... And, why is it that digital sucks so bad for black and white? I've noticed that too... It just doesn't have the same quality...
